Frequently Asked Questions
What is therapy like?
Your therapy experience will be tailored to your needs, involving discussions around current events, relevant personal history, and progress from previous sessions. Whether short-term for specific issues or longer-term for personal development, regular sessions (typically weekly or bi-weekly) are common. Active participation, enhances results, as therapy aims to integrate learned insights into daily life.
During the initial sessions, our focus will be on building a connection and gaining insight into the reasons for you seeking therapy. I'll inquire about your past to grasp a deeper understanding of your unique perspective, enabling me to customize my approach to suit your needs. As therapy progresses, anticipate a blend of encouragement and constructive feedback aimed at empowering you to enact positive transformations in your life.
Do you take insurance, and how does that work?
I accept Aetna, Cigna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield.
To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, the first thing you should do is call them. Check your coverage carefully and make sure you understand their answers. Some helpful questions you can ask them:
What are my mental health benefits?
What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
How many therapy sessions does my plan cover?
Is approval required from my primary care physician?
Am I able to use these benefits for telehealth?
If you have insurance that I do not take, I can provide you with a monthly superbill (a receipt showing how much you paid out-of-pocket). Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits? How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network (OON) provider? What is my deductible for out-of-network coverage and has it been met?
How can therapy help me?
Therapy can be immensely beneficial for individuals facing a wide range of challenges and concerns. Therapists can provide a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or guide you towards finding a solution. Here are several ways in which therapy can help someone:
Emotional Support: Therapy provides a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings. Therapists offer empathy, validation, and understanding, which can alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Insight and Self-awareness: Therapy helps individuals gain insight into their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through this process, they can develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their patterns, and their motivations.
Coping Strategies: Therapists teach practical coping strategies and techniques to help individuals manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other life challenges. These skills can empower individuals to navigate difficult situations more effectively.
Behavioral Change: Therapy can facilitate behavioral change by helping individuals identify unhealthy patterns and develop healthier ways of thinking and behaving. This may involve challenging negative beliefs, setting goals, and implementing positive changes in daily life.
Relationship Improvement: Therapy can improve communication and interpersonal skills, leading to healthier relationships with family members, friends, and partners. Therapists may also offer guidance on resolving conflicts and setting boundaries.
Enhanced Self-esteem: Therapy can help individuals develop a more positive self-image and improve self-esteem. By challenging self-critical thoughts and building self-compassion, individuals can cultivate a greater sense of worthiness and confidence.
Goal Achievement: Therapists collaborate with individuals to identify personal goals and aspirations. Through encouragement, accountability, and support, therapy can help individuals clarify their priorities and take steps towards achieving their objectives.
Why do people go to therapy and how do I know it is right for me?
People seek psychotherapy for many reasons, whether navigating life transitions, managing stress, or addressing issues like low self-esteem, depression, anxiety or relationship problems. Therapy offers support, skills, and encouragement to navigate these challenges. Some are also motivated to deepen self-understanding or enhance their life goals. In essence, those seeking psychotherapy are prepared to meet the challenges in their life and enact positive changes.
What if we are not a good fit?
If you and I find that we're not a good fit, it's completely okay and even common. Therapy is deeply personal, and it's crucial that you feel comfortable and supported throughout the process. If you find that you're not connecting with me or feeling understood, it's important to address it openly. We can discuss your concerns and explore potential alternatives, whether it's adjusting our approach, referring you to another therapist who may be a better fit, or exploring different therapy modalities. Your well-being and progress are the top priorities, and finding the right therapeutic relationship is essential for your growth and healing.
